Research On Grounding
Earthing, also known as grounding, is the practice of reconnecting the body with the Earth’s natural electrical environment. This can happen outdoors through direct barefoot contact with grass, soil, sand or other conductive natural surfaces. It can also be done indoors with grounding products such as mats, sheets and pillowcases that connect to a suitable earth connection.
Interest in grounding has grown over the years, with small studies and review papers exploring areas such as sleep, stress, recovery, inflammation markers, blood flow, body voltage and general wellbeing.
At Dozearth, we present this information in a careful and balanced way. The research is interesting, but it is still developing. Grounding products should be viewed as general wellness products, not medical treatments.
A Balanced Note on Grounding Research
Grounding is an emerging wellness topic. Some published papers report possible changes in sleep quality, relaxation, recovery, inflammation related markers, circulation markers and stress response. However, many studies in this area are small, early stage or written by authors who support grounding as a concept.
For that reason, Dozearth does not make disease treatment claims. Our products are intended to support comfort, rest and everyday wellbeing.
Research Areas Commonly Discussed
Grounding papers and reviews often discuss the following areas:
- Sleep quality and rest routines
- Stress response and relaxation
- Exercise recovery and muscle soreness
- Inflammation related markers
- Blood flow and circulation markers
- Body voltage and electrical charge
- Mood and general wellbeing
These areas should not be read as guaranteed outcomes. Individual experiences vary.
Selected Grounding Studies
Earthing: Health Implications of Reconnecting the Human Body to the Earth’s Surface Electrons
This review article discusses the theory behind grounding and brings together early observations and research related to sleep, pain, stress, inflammation and physiology. It is useful for understanding the proposed mechanisms, but should be read with the awareness that the field needs more independent research.
The Effects of Grounding on Inflammation, Immune Response, Wound Healing, and Prevention and Treatment of Chronic Inflammatory and Autoimmune Diseases
This paper reviews grounding in relation to inflammation, immune response and wound healing. The title uses strong medical language, so customers should treat it as research discussion rather than proof that grounding treats a health condition.
Earthing the Human Body Reduces Blood Viscosity: A Major Factor in Cardiovascular Disease
This study looked at blood viscosity markers during grounding. People who take blood thinning medication should speak with their doctor before using grounding products regularly.
The Biologic Effects of Grounding the Human Body During Sleep
This early sleep focused study looked at grounding during sleep and reported changes in subjective sleep, pain and stress measures. It is often referenced in grounding discussions, but should be treated as early research rather than conclusive evidence.
Pilot Study on the Effect of Grounding on Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness
This pilot study explored grounding in relation to delayed-onset muscle soreness after exercise. The findings are interesting for recovery discussions, but larger studies are needed before strong conclusions can be made.
The Effect of Grounding the Human Body on Mood
This study explored whether grounding may influence mood over a short session. As with many grounding papers, the sample size and study design should be considered before interpreting the findings too strongly.
Electrical Grounding Improves Vagal Tone in Preterm Infants
This clinical study is sometimes cited in grounding research discussions. It should not be interpreted as a recommendation to use grounding products with infants without medical supervision.
Review Papers and Broader Discussions
Review papers can help explain the theory behind grounding and summarise earlier studies. They can also carry limitations, especially when the authors have a strong interest in the topic.
Customers should read grounding research with a balanced mindset. Supporters see grounding as a simple way to reconnect with the Earth. Critics argue that current evidence is limited and stronger independent trials are needed.
Our view: Grounding may be a useful wellness practice for some people, especially as part of a rest or relaxation routine. It should not replace medical care, prescribed medication, professional advice or healthy lifestyle basics.
What This Means for Customers
Grounding may be worth exploring if you are interested in:
- Creating a calmer evening or sleep routine
- Using a grounding mat while working at a desk
- Adding a simple wellness habit to your daily routine
- Spending more time connected with natural surfaces outdoors
- Trying indoor grounding when barefoot outdoor contact is not practical
Results are not guaranteed. Some people report noticeable changes, while others may feel little or no difference.
Safety and Responsible Use
Before using grounding products regularly, speak with your healthcare provider if you:
- Take blood thinning medication such as warfarin or similar medicines
- Take medication for blood sugar control
- Take thyroid medication
- Take anti-inflammatory medication
- Have a heart condition or implanted medical device
- Are pregnant
- Have a complex medical history
- Take several prescription medicines
Do not stop, reduce or change medication because of grounding unless your doctor advises you to do so.
