Common Questions

What does earthing or grounding mean?

Earthing, often called grounding, means making contact with the Earth’s natural electrical charge. This happens outdoors when bare skin touches conductive natural surfaces such as grass, soil, sand or unsealed concrete.

Indoor grounding products are designed to offer a similar connection inside the home by linking a conductive product, such as a mat, sheet or pillowcase, to a suitable earth connection.

How does a grounding mat work?

A grounding mat uses a conductive surface that connects to a grounding cord. The cord is designed to connect to the earth point of a compatible New Zealand or Australian 3 pin wall outlet, or in some setups, an outdoor grounding rod.

When your skin touches the mat, your body is connected to the earth path through the grounding system.

Does a grounding mat use household electricity?

No. A grounding mat is not powered like an electrical appliance.

The cord is intended to connect to the earth connection only. It does not use the live power supply and should not send household electricity through the mat.

Is a wall outlet connection similar to using an outdoor grounding rod?

Both methods are used to create an earth connection.

In many modern homes in New Zealand and Australia, the earth pin in a wall outlet is connected to the property’s earthing system. A grounding rod connects directly into the ground outside. Both options are commonly used with grounding products, depending on the setup.

Do New Zealand and Australian homes have an earth connection?

Most modern homes in New Zealand and Australia are wired with an electrical earth connection. That said, older homes, renovations, damaged outlets, faulty wiring or unusual installations can create issues.

For peace of mind, test the outlet with a suitable socket tester or ask a licensed electrician to check it.

Is it safe to use grounding through a wall outlet?

Grounding products are designed to connect to the earth connection, not the live electrical supply.

For safer use, follow the instructions, use the supplied cord, avoid damaged plugs or outlets, and test your socket if you are unsure. If your home has older wiring or you have any doubts, speak with a licensed electrician before use.

What might I notice when I start grounding?

Experiences vary. Some people say they feel calmer, more settled or more comfortable during sleep. Others may notice gradual changes over time, or no obvious change at all.

It is best to start with shorter sessions and see how your body responds.

How can I practise earthing outdoors?

You can practise natural earthing by placing bare skin on conductive outdoor surfaces, such as:

  • grass
  • soil
  • sand
  • gravel
  • unsealed concrete that is in contact with the ground

Moist ground usually conducts better than dry ground. Surfaces such as asphalt, timber, rubber, plastic, vinyl and many indoor floors generally do not provide the same direct earth connection.

How can I practise grounding indoors?

Indoor grounding products are useful when barefoot outdoor contact is not practical. Common options include grounding mats, sheets, pillowcases, bands, patches, cords and accessories.

These products usually connect to the earth connection of a suitable NZ/AU wall outlet or to an outdoor grounding rod, depending on the product and setup.

Is earthing a new idea?

No. Direct contact with the ground has always been part of normal human life. People traditionally walked barefoot, slept closer to the Earth and spent more time outdoors.

Modern shoes, raised beds, indoor flooring and daily indoor routines have reduced that natural contact. Grounding products were created to make earthing easier in modern homes.

Can I use grounding products if I take medication?

If you take medication or have a medical condition, speak with your healthcare provider before regular grounding use.

This is especially important if you take blood thinning medication, blood sugar medication, thyroid medication, anti inflammatory medication, heart medication or several prescription medicines.

Do not stop or change medication because of grounding unless your doctor advises you to.

Should I disconnect grounding products during a thunderstorm?

Yes. As a simple precaution, disconnect grounding products from the wall outlet during an active thunderstorm.

This is similar to unplugging sensitive electronics during severe weather.

Can I sleep grounded overnight?

Many people use grounding sheets or mats during sleep. If you are new to grounding, start with shorter daytime sessions first.

Once you know how you respond, you can slowly increase use if it feels comfortable.

Do grounding products work through clothing?

Grounding usually works best with direct skin contact.

Thin or slightly moist fabric may still allow some conductivity, but thick or dry clothing can reduce contact. For best results, place bare skin on the conductive surface where practical.

How do I check if my outlet is properly earthed?

The simplest option is to use a socket tester suitable for New Zealand and Australian outlets.

A socket tester can help confirm whether the outlet has a working earth connection. If the tester shows a fault, or if you are unsure about the result, ask a licensed electrician.

Can I use a power board or extension lead?

Only use a power board or extension lead if it has a working earth connection and is in good condition.

Avoid loose, damaged, old or untested power boards. When possible, connect directly to a tested wall outlet.

Are Dozearth grounding products medical devices?

No. Dozearth grounding products are general wellness products.

They are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease or health condition. For medical concerns, always speak with a qualified healthcare professional.
