Testing your products
This guide explains simple ways to check whether your grounding mat, sheet or pillowcase is connected properly. It is written for customers in New Zealand and Australia using compatible grounding products with NZ/AU style wall outlets.
Testing is useful because a grounding product needs three things to work correctly: a working earth connection, a good grounding cord, and contact with the conductive surface of the product.
Important Safety Note
Do not open wall outlets, modify plugs or attempt electrical work yourself. If you are unsure about your home wiring, use a plug in socket tester or ask a licensed electrician.
Grounding products should connect to the earth connection only. They should not connect to live power.
What You May Need
You do not need all of these tools, but they can help you check different parts of your setup.
- A socket tester suitable for New Zealand and Australian outlets
- A grounding product tester, if supplied with your product
- A digital multimeter with continuity or resistance mode
- The original grounding cord supplied with your mat or sheet
- Clean bare skin contact with the product surface
Quick Testing Method
Best for: Basic home checks
Test the wall outlet first
Plug a suitable socket tester into the wall outlet you plan to use. The tester should confirm that the outlet has a working earth connection. Follow the instructions that come with your tester.
Connect the grounding cord
Attach the grounding cord to your mat, sheet or pillowcase. Then plug the other end into the earth connection using the supplied plug or adaptor.
Check the product connection
If your product includes a grounding tester, place it on the conductive surface as instructed. A positive result usually means the product surface, cord and earth connection are linked correctly.
Use bare skin contact
Grounding works best when bare skin touches the conductive surface. Thick or dry clothing can reduce contact.
How to Test With a Multimeter
A multimeter can help check whether your grounding product has a conductive path. This is a simple continuity or resistance check, not a medical test.
Continuity or Resistance Test
- Set your multimeter to continuity mode or resistance mode.
- Place one probe on the metal snap, stud or connection point of the grounding product.
- Place the other probe on different areas of the mat or sheet surface.
- A continuity beep or resistance reading usually indicates that the surface is conductive.
- Move the probe to a few areas to check that the conductive surface is working evenly.
If there is no reading, make sure the probes are touching the conductive part of the product and that the multimeter is set correctly.
Note: Some grounding cords include a built in safety resistor. Because of this, readings through the full cord may not behave like a normal wire. This does not automatically mean the cord is faulty.
Testing a Grounding Sheet
Grounding sheets usually contain conductive fibres woven through the fabric. To test them properly, check more than one area.
- Connect the sheet to the grounding cord.
- Use the supplied tester or a multimeter to check different parts of the sheet.
- Make sure the tester touches the conductive fabric, not just a seam or label.
- Wash and care for the sheet according to the instructions, as residue from oils, lotions or harsh detergents may affect performance over time.
Testing a Grounding Mat
Grounding mats are usually easier to test because the surface is more clearly conductive.
- Check that the cord is firmly connected to the mat.
- Test the wall outlet earth connection first.
- Use the product tester or multimeter on the mat surface.
- Clean the mat gently if the surface has dust, oil or residue.
Common Testing Results
| Result | What It May Mean | What to Check |
|---|---|---|
| Socket tester shows no earth | The wall outlet may not have a working earth connection. | Try another outlet or contact a licensed electrician. |
| Tester works on one outlet but not another | One outlet may be wired differently or may have a fault. | Use a tested outlet and avoid the faulty one until checked. |
| Mat or sheet tester does not light up | The cord may be loose, the outlet may not be earthed, or the product surface may not be making proper contact. | Check the cord, outlet, connection point and product surface. |
| Multimeter gives no continuity reading | The probe may not be touching a conductive area, or the meter may be on the wrong setting. | Check the meter setting and test several parts of the product. |
| Product tests correctly but you feel no difference | Testing confirms connection only. It does not guarantee how you will feel. | Use grounding as a general wellness habit and keep expectations realistic. |
Simple Maintenance Tips
- Keep the conductive surface clean and dry before testing.
- Avoid harsh cleaners, bleach, fabric softeners or oily residue on grounding sheets.
- Do not use damaged cords, broken snaps or cracked plugs.
- Store cords neatly so they do not bend sharply or get pulled.
- Disconnect grounding products during active thunderstorms.
Testing FAQ
Do I need to test my grounding product before use?
Testing is recommended, especially before first use. It helps confirm that your wall outlet has a working earth connection and that the product is connected correctly.
Can I use a grounding product without a socket tester?
You can, but testing gives better peace of mind. A socket tester is a simple way to check whether the outlet earth connection is working.
Why does my multimeter reading change in different areas?
Grounding sheets and fabric products can vary slightly across the surface because of the weave and fibre contact. Test several areas and make sure the probe is touching a conductive section.
Can a grounding cord still be working if it has resistance?
Yes. Some grounding cords include built in resistance as a safety feature. That means they may not test like a standard low resistance wire.
Does a successful test mean I will feel benefits?
No. A test only checks the connection. Individual experiences with grounding vary, and results are not guaranteed.
What should I do if I think my product is not working?
Check the outlet, cord, connection point and product surface. If you still cannot confirm the connection, contact Dozearth support with your order number and a short description of the issue.
